Caring for Your Favorite Pair of Jeans So They Last for Years

Preserving JeansJeans are often an expensive investment, and finding the right pair, the one that looks and fits perfectly, can be quite an undertaking. That’s why jean care is such an important part of wardrobe maintenance. At DELIA’S Cleaners, we believe that the best approach is to have them dry cleaned and professionally pressed. However, if you prefer to care for them at home, consider this advice.

Home Care for Jeans
  • Wash only when absolutely necessary. Jeans conform to our bodies and when washed, most of the shape is lost. So, in general, if jeans aren’t visibly dirty, keep wearing them.
  • Turn them inside-out before putting them in the washing machine. This helps reduce fabric bleeding and cuts down on friction to the “face” (aka the outside) of the fabric.
  • Avoid the dryer, hang them up to dry. Believe it or not, a dryer can be their worst enemy. To avoid fading, shrinking and unwanted distressing, hang them up when they are still wet.

Recently a news station in Denver, Colorado, reported that jeans which were dry cleaned, “looked as good as they did on day one only softer. The pairs that were washed looked older and lost color.” Their research showed that, “If you wash them, they need to be your cheap pair. The jeans you want to keep for a long time and keep looking good should be dry cleaned by a professional dry cleaner.”

At DELIA’S Cleaners, we couldn’t agree more!
